There's lots you can do around your home to prevent burns and scalds such as using fireguards when kids are around and keeping appliances l ike irons and hair straighteners out of harm?s way. The sun?s rays, electricity and chemicals (in cleaning products for example) can also be dangerous.

  • If in doubt, get medical help
  • Switch off electrical appliances and remove hot water first
  • Cool the burn under cold running water for at least 10 minutes, then dry carefully
  • Dress the burn with a burn dressing
  • Never put fat or butter onto burns
  • If anything is stuck to the skin such as clothing, don't remove it - go to your local A&E.
